Credit repair is what you engage in when you want to clean up your credit report of negative remarks, or correct false or inaccurate information, and/or delete expired or obsolete items that appear on your personal credit report, which, if done properly, can result in raising your credit score.
Credit repair takes a load of patience, persistence, professional communication and creative negotiation.
- You do not need to pay a credit repair service to repair your credit
- Credit repair services cannot do anything that you cannot do on your own
Credit repair is something that YOU CAN DO COMPLETELY ON YOUR OWN, and IF DONE RIGHT, credit repair really does work.
However, if you do choose to tackle the credit repair process on your own, it may be necessary for you to learn a few laws regarding credit and the credit repair process, so that you may effectively navigate and control creditors, debt collectors, and credit bureaus, smoothly and effectively.
Two in particular, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
There are a few others, but these are a good place to start.
The FCRA was passed in 1970 and it is the federal law that ensures the accuracy, the fairness, and the privacy of your personal information within your credit bureau file.
In addition, this federal law regulates how credit reporting agencies may collect and access, use and share, this vital information inside of your personal credit report.
The information in your personal credit report can either help you or hinder you, and this is WHY it is so extremely important that consumers KNOW what their personal credit reports reveal about them.
The FDCPA (15 USC 1692 et seq.) became law in 1978, and this ACT forbids debt collectors from behaving abusively when communicating with debtors, or engaging in deception, or deploying unfair debt collection practices.
Unfortunately, many debt collectors may not have been trained properly, and may choose to ignore the FDCPA, and because the vast majority of the general population may not be aware of this federal law, or more to the point, what this federal law dictates, debt collectors often get away with some very unsavory collection tactics.
It is important for you to know, that credit repair, though a very manageable ‘DIY’ process, may require at some point for you to verbally communicate with people who may, at times, be very difficult to work with, such as creditors, debt collectors, and yes, credit bureaus.
It is also very important for you to KNOW that the credit laws are continuously being updated, as many rules and regulations across the country do change, and it is important to remain aware of these changes in the federal laws.
