The best money managers out there will tell you… ‘Don’t Spend More Money Than You Make’ and this is absolutely great advice.
The issue with this ‘great advice’ is that sometimes ‘Over-Spending’ can be related to an underlying emotional problem, and getting to the root of the problem may be of some help.
Overspending, sometimes, may be used as a ‘drug’ to overcome the feelings of sadness, loneliness, and/or depression.
Let’s face it, buying something ‘new’, like a pair of new shoes, a new outfit, a new car, heck, even buying something ‘used’, but ‘new-to-you’, can make you feel better… for the moment.
Until the bill comes in at the end of the month and then you realize that you can’t afford to pay the bill.
Sort of like the high-good-feeling of a good drug or a good drink that begins to wear off.
Then, on the other side of the spectrum, you may have a person who has a desire to impress others and show off with fancy jewelry, shiny cars, and designer clothes.
All the while living paycheck to paycheck, or worse, living off their credit cards, just to keep up the illusion of something that they are not… yet.
Now I am not at all qualified to give out mental health advice, but I do have some personal experience that might bring some value to some people.
As I was told by a very wise person a long time ago…
Live where you are… but strive for your future.
Part of making this nugget-of-wisdom work is to be at peace with where you are in your life at the moment, while at the same time, planning and working towards building your future dreams and goals.
The problem with ‘problems’ is that a problem may seem insignificant to someone else looking in… but to the person who is experiencing the particular problem, can make themselves feel as though the world is crashing in… and no one cares.
If you are suffering from sadness, loneliness, or depression, I would suggest that you actively look to find someone to talk to, and if you don’t have someone in your life that you feel you can trust, you can always turn to your local church.
You will be so amazed at the network of people that you will find all around you, once you begin to move towards making that first human connection, who are so willing to help.
Now, if you are the type of person who is ‘spending to impress’, I can confidently say to you, no one really cares, and quite frankly, your ‘money-problems’ can be very easily and quickly fixed, if you stop spending all that ‘extra’ money, and just make a commitment… to simply be the ‘real’ you.
I can also say to you, that if you stop creating the illusion of wealth, that when you actually do happen to achieve those milestones along the way, those moments of success will be so much more fulfilling, as you will have your family and your closest of friends around you, to celebrate both your small and large successes and victories with you.
